Elem Eley
I am a professional singer and voice teacher, presently living in beautiful New Jersey, but a native of the great state of Georgia. In 1987, I joined the faculty at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, from which I retired in 2021 as Professor of Voice Emeritus.
It has been my privilege to sing throughout the United States and in Europe, while blending my two major professional interests of singing and teaching into one career. This blog reflects my ideas on singing, teaching, learning, and life; I occasionally quote other sources, link to YouTube, etc.
Though my intention is not to be overtly evangelistic or dogmatic, know that I view life through the lens of Christian faith. Warning: my enthusiasm often leads me to “think out loud,” so drop by regularly enough to get the big picture — welcome!
PS — I created the screen name of “Kavbar” as a contraction of my Fach (operatic repertoire classification in the German system), Kavalierbariton. The Kavalierbariton is a voice/character midway between “lyric” baritone and “dramatic” baritone. A singer at home in this Fach may also perform some lyric or dramatic roles well.

As a former student of yours, (short lived due to a family tragedy in my life), I’m very thrilled to see your extended teaching via blogs and look forward to reading more! I admire your style and technique of teaching (and singing of course). I’m investigating and planning to start my own private voice studio in my home and would love to hear any ideas and / or suggestions you may have in that area as well.
Thanks again for sharing your expertise and experience online. I almost feel I’m back in your studio again. 🙂
By the way, I still have the cassette tapes of our voice sessions! My family enjoyed listening to them!

Dave, it is wonderful to hear from you — and, wow, you still have your lesson tapes! I hope you still have a cassette player, too, as they are hard to find these days.
